CARACAS, Venezuela - A U.S. congresswoman called on the Bush administration Wednesday to reconsider its ban on selling parts for U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to Venezuela, urging improved ties between the two nations.
U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, told reporters that she was making the first U.S. congressional visit to Venezuela since President Hugo Chavez's December re-election with the message: "I want an immediate repairing of the relations between the United States and Venezuela."
Jackson Lee described Venezuela as a friendly nation that the U.S. should cooperate with and said that the F-16 jets, which are built in Texas, was an issue of concern to her constituents in Houston.
Pledging to "personally go back and raise" the issue, she called for the U.S. Congress "to reconsider sanctions on the F-16s."
The U.S. State Department has banned arms sales to Venezuela, including parts necessary to maintain its fleet of F-16s, citing a lack of support by Chavez's government for counterterrorism efforts and its close relations with Iran and Cuba.
Venezuela has since begun receiving the first of 24 Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets as part of approximately $3 billion in military deals that Chavez has signed with Moscow.
She said her fact-finding mission to Venezuela was part of an effort by a new Democrat-controlled Congress to show that "Venezuela has many friends in this new Congress."
Now just what rock do you suppose Ms. Jackson-Lee has been living under? Is she completely unaware of Hugo Chavez's most recent trip to America? Did she miss his trip to Iran? Do other Democrats think it's a good idea to sell him parts for his fighter jets? Seriously, what is her motivation for such a move? Is she doing it because the plants that make such parts are in her district? Or is it because she believes Chavez is a good man? Maybe it's because she leans toward his politics? Then again, maybe she's just plain stupid.
Either way, supplying Chavez is like supplying Castro, Ahmadiejhad, Kim Jung Il, et al.
Do her colleagues agree with her comment "Venezuela has many friends in this new Congress?" It wasn't that long ago, we would have called this "TREASON".....
What's the next great idea coming down democratic party pike, supply Iran with Uranium? I sure hope Americans know and understand just how dangerous this "new congress" is becoming....
When we called the attempted coup against Chavez a "victory for democracy" - what the hell did we expect? And especially in light of the fact that his ouster would've been MORE authoritarian.
The truth is this administration has botched nearly every aspect of foreign policy - Venezuela, Russia, China, Iraq, etc. A bunch of cold-war meatheads w/ an anti-midas touch...
He's just as dangerous as Kim Jung Il except not as crazy. He has aspirations of controlling more than just Venezuela.
He is a threat to the national security of any nation within an airstrike distance.
Son, I think you need to join the military to get a better idea of what foreign policy is and how to identify a threat.
You think Bush is an idiot. I'll grant you that. But you spouting your mouth with things you don't understand makesyou look just as stupid.
Also, please refute anything I said in my above post (doubtful you can). Of course you didn't even TRY to do that did you? All fluff in your response. If you want to debate the issue then let's do it the right way - namecalling only serves to remove any credibility an already anonymous poster might have.
And just for the record, I actually study foreign policy more than any 100 people combined that I know - I'm a nerd like that...
I don't care how many hours you've studied foreign policy from some liberal professor. I want to know how much foregin policy you've actually witnessed with your own eyes.
Lastly, you're mad because you thought I was name calling because I said your position made you look stupid. I was addressing your position, not you personally. You need to reread the last line of your original comment. That is the classic definition of a personal attack.
At this point I don't think selling those parts is the right starting point nor a realistic one.
Having said that, I think it's imperative that we try and repair relations w/ Venezuela. Just opening up a dialogue again would be a nice start. We receive a large portion of our imported oil from them and American corporations have invested A LOT of money in that country.
Taking a Castro-like stance against him will only prove to be as politically futile as the ongoing Castro stance has been. And I think everyone would agree that Venezuela has far more economic and political impact than Cuba.
While a socialist, he WAS elected and we should've never supported (if only verbally) the coup against him. I don't think the damage is that severe to be undone and I think comparing him to the North Korean dictator is ridiculous. We have favorable relations w/ FAR WORSE (certainly from a humanitarian perspective) leaders than Chavez...
VS,
If you think Chavez getting weapons is the same as Al Qaeda getting them then I think you need to re-evaluate WHO needs the foreign policy background/experience...
As for "opening a dialogue" (by far the most worn-out and least definitive dem talking point)goes, what is it we need to "chat" with Hugo about? The weather? Harry Belafonte tickets? Our relations with Venezuela are fine just the way they are, and most of us don't give a flying fuck what they think of us. We could kiss their ass and provide gazillions in aid and we'd still get the finger.
Like it or not we get 11% of our oil imports from Venezuela. Also, they are gaining more and more power in the region. This idea that we can just do whatever we please and damn the consequences is very dangerous - if not militarily then economically...
...and when things got a little "complicated" back in 1978-79, we pulled out of there, and left them with brand new fighter jets with absolutely NO support personnel, NO spares, NO repair documentation, and NO way to fire missiles from the aircraft (thanks to some really great Grumman techs that managed to take the electronics with them when they bugged out)...
All these planes are doing today is collecting rust and dust!
And look at what IRAN has become since then. Glad we did what we did THEN.
National Security Threats aren't like the schoolyard bully with a chip on his shoulder...
I say don't sell the F16 parts...we have plenty of ALLIES that can use them to better ends.
As for Hugo....well, he could learn from Khadaffi.
